Snowbound Announces Enhanced PDF/A Output Support

Gives Customers Greater Document Archiving Capability

January 14, 2011 (Boston, MA) – Snowbound Software, the leader in document viewing and conversion solutions, in ongoing efforts to offer its clients the greatest document handling choices, has developed and released PDF/A output support for all the input formats it supports.

Snowbound’s PDF/A output generates PDF documents conforming to the PDF/A specification intended for long-term archival storage. Documents, whether TIFF, PDF, MS Office or a multitude of other formats are converted to a raster version that is embedded within a PDF/A wrapper. This method doesn’t require the addition of embedded fonts and is safer from modification. However the output is not text searchable.

Adobe has released several versions of their PDF application over the years; each has enriched the format with new features. However, as global requirements grew for reliable electronic archiving, Adobe defined a stable derivative of the PDF format, based on their proprietary specification that could be internationally accepted as a Standard for long-term electronic archiving. Thus, PDF/A was created, providing a mechanism for representing electronic documents in a manner that preserves their visual appearance over time, independent of the tools and systems used for creating, storing or rendering the files.

“Many of our customers have asked for a simple method to convert their documents to a PDF/A conformant format. This is a simple and fast solution suitable for both mass document conversion and for creating a consistent set of documents suitable for archiving. Cost is minimized because no embedded fonts are required. It is available in our entire product family,” explained Simon Wieczner, President of Snowbound Software.
