Expert identifies pros, cons of cloud-based SharePoint

by | Mar 27, 2012

Organizations worldwide have experienced the benefits of using Microsoft’s SharePoint software for years, but companies now have an opportunity to access the solution through the cloud. CMSWire’s David Roe recently highlighted the benefits and disadvantages of SharePoint via Office 365, Micrsoft’s cloud-based software.

According to Roe, hosted SharePoint 2010 offers companies enhanced business intelligence, search and enterprise content management capabilities.

“Despite issues around geographical location and performance, Office 365, to all intents and purposes, enables real-time collaboration,” Roe wrote. “This counters the over-reliance on email, which takes time and takes the real out of real time.”

Some pitfalls associated with Office 365 include the fact that businesses using the solution should have IT professionals on site to maintain the platform, as well as deal with functionality issues between previous versions. Companies must also be aware that storage and costs may exceed current levels, putting organizations in a precarious position.

Whether SharePoint is in the cloud or premise based, the collaboration software is key to Microsoft’s success. ZDNet’s Oliver Marks recently suggested that the application is ideal for governance and compliance issues, but the upcoming release must address growing technology concerns, including the cloud, to remain competitive with Salesforce.
