SharePoint could become $2 billion business for Microsoft

by | Sep 9, 2010

SharePoint has become a big seller for Microsoft and is expected to surpass $2 billion in total sales.Strong sales and anticipated growth may result in content management solution SharePoint becoming a $2 billion product for Microsoft. The company has released several items that have yielded sales north of $1 billion, including Xbox and SQL Server, but few have pushed the $2 billion mark.

With the release of SharePoint 2010 earlier this year, new and old users of the solution have seen a substantial increase in overall utility. Aside from content management capabiltiy, Sharepoint 2010 allows companies to manage websites and develop social media solutions that facilitate internal collaboration.

For some, the lofty expectations placed on SharePoint seemed a bit shocking, since the entire ECM industry was pegged at roughly $4 billion in value by market research firm Gartner in 2007. However, a number of factors have led to increased adoption and need for reliable ECM solutions, including increased government regulations demanding data retention and protection of customer data.

However, SharePoint growth can likely be attributed to its widespread capability. According to the Association for Image and Information Management, 22 percent of companies using SharePoint require every employee to interact with the solution to carry out their daily responsibilities.ADNFCR-1861-ID-19938269-ADNFCR
