With enterprise content management solutions security is always a major issue but, according to Gartner, companies need to refocus their security efforts when it comes to Microsoft SharePoint.
In a post on the company blog, Gartner”s Neil MacDonald says the company estimates as much as 30 percent of SharePoint servers fall outside of boundaries of IT management.
Much of this is because of the rapid adoption of SharePoint by enterprise which may leave it open to security risks. MacDonald writes that there are a number of free options for businesses looking to make sure their SharePoint servers are following security guidelines and confirm that it”s protected.
Although checking on the security of the enterprise content management solution may not be something many businesses want to do, MacDonald says it”s better to be safe than sorry.
"It”s time to turn on the flashlight in the closet. Maybe it”s scary. Maybe it”s not. But at least now you”ll know," he writes.
The findings from Gartner fall in line with a survey last month from Information Architected which found that 40 percent of companies were unaware of how large their SharePoint deployment was.
