Many small businesses may be under the impression that enterprise content management (ECM) is only a worthwhile investment for larger businesses with vast amounts of documents and information.
However, according to Dan Antion, vice president of information services for American Nuclear Insurers, even small businesses can benefit from ECM solutions.
In an article on the global ECM community blog AIIM, Antion noted that when it comes to ECM, "size doesn”t matter."
He told small business owners that not addressing document management may mean that the company pays for information it no longer needs, and increases the risk that the employees will not be able to find the right information.
ECM can also help small businesses reduce the cost of document storage, and can improve the timeliness of customer response, Antion wrote.
Yet before implementing ECM solutions, small business owners are encouraged to do their homework about providers, as they are not all created equal. They also should train their employees on ECM best practices, to maximize the technology”s benefits, said Antion.
ECM solutions have become an increasingly attractive option for small businesses, especially as the rapid evolution of internet technology has created more content than ever – a recent survey from e-Spirit found that the majority of businesses are frustrated with the time it takes to manage their content.
