Next version of SharePoint to include Fast Search

by | Feb 11, 2009

Microsoft''s new version of SharePoint will impliment Fast SearchMicrosoft announced today that its next version of enterprise content management (ECM) software SharePoint will incorporate Fast Search technology.

The new version of SharePoint will be part of Office 14 which has yet to have a release date announced, although it is widely expected to be on sale before the end of the year.

The hope for the company is that the inclusion of Fast Search into SharePoint will make the enterprise content management service more attractive to users as the ECM landscape becomes more crowded.

The move puts Microsoft into the ever growing world of enterprise search, which almost doubled in revenue in the last three years. According to Tom Eid, an analyst for Gartner, by adding enterprise search technology, Microsoft has the ability to increase the market for its other products.

"If you can deliver a very refined, very effective search capability, that’s really important, because it’s helping people do their jobs better," Eid told TechFlash. "That can then encourage other potential revenue opportunities for the vendor."

Last year Microsoft purchased the Norwegian company Fast Search & Transfer ASA for $1.2 billion.ADNFCR-1861-ID-19019116-ADNFCR
