To help companies using the collaboration software Microsoft SharePoint, global solutions provider EMC and communications and networking company NEC announced a new storage and configuration application.
The companies made the announcement at the recent Microsoft SharePoint 2011 Conference in Anaheim. According to an EMC press release, the solution can search and retrieve 108 million objects stored in a database, which represents a scalability improvement of 200 percent.
The system runs on EMC’s VNX unified storage and NEC Express Server configuration powered by the Intel Xeon E7 processor.
Jared Spataro, SharePoint director of product management for Microsoft, said that SharePoint 2010 can help companies scale their document management needs through its archiving and records management capabilities.
“The results from SharePoint 2010 testing with hardware provided by NEC, EMC and Intel shows the high-end scalability of SharePoint 2010 for large-scale document management and records management solutions,” said Spataro.
The use of SharePoint across the enterprise market continues to grow. According to a study by Enterprise Strategy Group, of the more than 3,100 IT professionals from North America and western Europe surveyed, 64 percent indicated their companies are using SharePoint, while 12 percent of participants said their organizations plan to start using SharePoint in the next year.
