Microsoft ”strong for cloud computing”

by | Nov 26, 2008

One IT expert predicts strength from Microsoft in the age of cloud computingOne IT expert has dismissed the notion that Microsoft could be poorly placed to deliver cloud computing solutions in the future.

Writing for Windows IT Pro, Paul Thurrott explains that some critics argue that cloud computing is a "tidal wave" flowing against Microsoft as a software vendor.

But he counters this contention with the observation that Microsoft is well positioned to serve developing needs in both the cloud computing and server-based IT infrastructure sectors.

He singles out collaboration tools within a SharePoint installation – which could include image conversion applications or a document viewer – as one example of the adoption of cloud computing.

And it is the strength of SharePoint for cloud computing adopters that leads Mr Thurrott to predict success for Microsoft in the future.

While he notes that the company is likely to step on the toes of some of its partners during this transitionary period, he adds that Microsoft”s actions over the coming months are likely to serve not just its own interests, but those of its customers.

Meanwhile, more effective document viewer or image conversion software could be a feature of future SharePoint installations, after it was recently revealed that the Microsoft User Research team is canvassing opinions on how to improve the platform.ADNFCR-1861-ID-18896767-ADNFCR
