In response to the rapidly growing popularity of enterprise content management solutions, Microsoft has just released a preview of the latest version of its SharePoint ECM software.
Microsoft is touting SharePoint 2010 as "the business collaboration platform for the enterprise and the web that enables you to connect and empower people through an integrated set of rich features," the company said in a release. "Whether deployed on-premises or as hosted services, SharePoint 2010 helps you cut costs with a unified infrastructure while allowing you to rapidly respond to your business needs."
Among the new features of SharePoint 2010 detailed in the preview are the new user interface (which features ribbon icons), web edit and rich theming capabilities that allow businesses to customize and skin their SharePoint sites, multiple browser supports, and increased rich media support.
Other additions include the SharePoint Workspace (formerly known as Groove), which allows businesses to move lists and libraries offline and sync them later; business connectivity services, which allow for connection to Line-of-Business applications, web services and databases; an enhanced SharePoint Designer tool; and Visio Services, which allows real-time sharing of data-linked diagrams.
SharePoint 2010 will be available in public beta form later this year, with a more detailed presentation at the SharePoint Conference in October.
