Microsoft adds microblogging to ECM agenda, report says

by | Mar 24, 2010

Microsoft is cooking up microblogging technology to be used in an enterprise content managing setting.Employees at businesses that employ enterprise content management solutions may soon find it easier to communicate with each other within the interface of their ECM system.

Microsoft is testing an application that allows microblogging and other social media functions within an enterprise context, according to a recent article in eWeek.

The application, while still in development at the Microsoft labs, is being called OfficeTalk. During an internal test with 10,000 people, researchers found that users were able to utilize the application to increase business productivity – not just for socializing.

In a recent blog post for the Microsoft laboratory, a researcher with the screen name Ashok says that ECM users can use the power of social networking to positively impact business.

"We have tested this concept on ourselves first," says Ashok. "Not only was the obvious demonstrated, that people don”t limit microblogging activity to the purely social, but that even an IT managed implementation focused on business productivity can spread quickly across informal networks and create unique collaboration efficiencies and experiences."

The application comes in addition to blog and wiki features that will be included in SharePoint 2010, the tech publication says.

SharePoint 2010 will be released on May 12, when Microsoft will host a live online demonstration about using the new software suite.ADNFCR-1861-ID-19687871-ADNFCR
