by | May 21, 2011

A headset manufacturer uses Microsoft SharePoint for increased collaboration.Platronics, a Santa Cruz, California, headset manufacturer has been utilizing Microsoft SharePoint for increased collaboration over the past decade, according to a recent report by TechTarget.

The company currently has 3,000 employees in 20 offices located throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. Tom Gill, chief information officer and vice president of information technology at the company, said that Microsoft SharePoint collaboration has been an important factor in the company’s architecture.

“Basically, it replaced our corporate intranet as our repository of all the information we want to share,” Gill told TechTarget. “SharePoint includes presence information. I can see if the person is currently around, and I can [instant message] them.”

The company not only utilizes SharePoint to store corporate information, but also for real-time collaboration, due to its integration with Lync, the report stated.

Overall, the manufacturing industry is expected to utilize SharePoint to a greater extent, according to IDC.

For companies considering upgrading from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010, there are several benefits, including security, document libraries and user interface enhancements. According to a report by InfoWorld, the most important factor for switching to SharePoint 2010 is to make sure the SharePoint 2007 environment is ready for the upgrade.
