Enterprise content management ”must be intelligent”

by | Nov 27, 2008

Businesses have been told to adopt an intelligent approach to enterprise content managementThe future of enterprise content management (ECM) lies in the intelligent use of data, it has been asserted.

ECM expert Ann Rockley tells online blog I”d Rather Be Writing of her interpretation of intelligent content.

Her comments could be of interest to firms looking to make the best use of a Java viewer or file conversion tool.

According to Rockley, intelligent content is adaptable, reusable and reconfigurable.

"We can output it to multiple channels, reconfiguring it to best meet the needs of the channel," she asserts.

"Or we can automatically mix and match content to provide us with the information the customer needs."

She adds that reconfiguration need not be an active process on the part of the user, but may be done without them even being aware.

A Java viewer or file conversion application could be one way in which to add such a capability to an existing ECM platform.

Rockley also stresses the need for content to include meta information and semantic tags.

Without identifying it in such a way, she suggests that data could be rendered more difficult to find in the first instance.

Charles Cooper recently wrote on the Rockley Group blog that metadata allows documents to be retrieved based on information other than the filename.

This could mean searching for a file created on a specific date by a specific person and subsequently checked by a particular third party, he added.ADNFCR-1861-ID-18899694-ADNFCR
