by | Feb 25, 2009

The Ingres'' Icebreaker ECM appliance will be powered by Alfresco''s open source softwareTwo open source venders have joined forces to work on an enterprise content management software application that they hope will be a rival to Microsoft”s SharePoint.

This week Ingres Corporation and Alfresco announced the joint project which will have Ingres” Icebreaker ECM appliance powered by Alfresco”s open source software.

The companies say that the open sourced nature of the software will make it a cost-effective alternative to products like SharePoint. Ingres CEO Roger Burkhardt says this is the way of the future and expects to see more products like this soon.

"This is one solution of many others that we believe we’ll see more of in 2009 and moving forward – where leading open source companies combine their advanced technologies to give businesses a real alternative to over-priced propriety offerings," said Burkhardt.

Customers using the new software will see improved efficiency and increased profits because of the performance, according to the companies.

But the biggest positive might be the low cost of the product. The companies say that by using all the open source components, users can drastically reduce ECM costs.ADNFCR-1861-ID-19043541-ADNFCR
