The latest version of Alfresco's open source enterprise content management software puts a significantly heavier focus on social content.
Available for immediate download, Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 continues the company's goal of providing open source ECM solutions that make it easier for users to manage both their internal and external social content.
While the focus on social content isn't new in ECM products, Alfresco's new offering perhaps puts more emphasis on it than others. Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 features a new Share interface that includes status updates, content activity streams and improved search capabilities. Additionally, it includes distributed content replication and collaborative web authoring through Alfresco Web Quick Start.
"Social content management is where the capabilities of social business systems and traditional enterprise content management meet," said Alfresco chief technology officer John Newton. "It is communication and collaboration with a business purpose, and it requires a platform that can deliver content for discussion and engagement that then captures the results of that discussion."
The move to focus more on social content has been evolving steadily in recent years. Pligg, KickApps and Ingeniux Cartella all currently offer social content management solutions to help companies improve their ECM capabilities.
