An AJAX Document Viewer? Is that a cleanser for your screen?

by | Apr 5, 2011

When I first arrived at Snowbound Software, a little over a year ago, my new colleagues used the phrase ‘AJAX document viewer’ like I should’ve known what they were talking about. (Not to mention the phrase ‘AJAX image viewer’ too.) I have some experience with viewing and imaging products and marketing these in the past, but I’m not quite that familiar with the technical acronyms, and so was a little thrown by this phrase. ‘AJAX’ it turns out is shorthand for ‘asynchronous java script and XML’, which per Wikipedia is ‘a group of interrelated web development methods used on the client-side to create interactive web applications.’

Snowbound uses this methodology to create its line of AJAX document viewers and AJAX image viewers which enable our clients to securely access all types of document and image files (enterprise-wide) for easier and faster forms processing, and to better assist their customers. An AJAX document viewer is used via any Web browser, so files may be viewed from almost anywhere, and as it is a ‘universal viewer’ virtually any document or image may be accessed, without the need to have the application(s) that files were created in on the users’ PC, tablet or smartphone.

But when I first got here – all I could think of is that AJAX is a competitor of Comet, right?

Now while I realize that many of those in our target audience are much more technically savvy than I, I’ve made a concerted effort over the past year to try to get the focus of our marketing a bit more on the benefits Snowbound brings to the table, than the technology used to bring them about. In other words, implementing the ‘letting our customers and prospects know what’s in it for them’ approach.

By the way, the difference in referencing AJAX document viewer versus AJAX image viewer is just the difference in file type being viewed. Images are file types such as JPEGs, TIFFs and HTML, while documents are generally those created in applications such as Word, Excel and Acrobat (PDF). A professional-level document viewer will work with hundreds of file types, so the nomenclature of AJAX document viewer or AJAX image viewer will be of little consequence to the end user. The viewer will convert, process and display these files in the blink of an eye!

So, what is ‘in it’ for our customers using an AJAX image viewer? Well, aside from the secure and easy access to files via Web browser as mentioned above, I like to focus on the real-world benefits. As the closer states in all our media releases (which I wrote):
